Summary

Millie Morris has always been one of the guys。 A UC Santa Barbara professor, she’s a female-serial-killer expert who’s quick with a deflection joke and terrible at getting personal。 And she, just like her four best guy friends and fellow professors, is perma-single。

So when a routine university function turns into a black tie gala, Mille and her circle make a pact that they’ll join an online dating service to find plus-ones for the event。 There’s only one hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, secretly spend the sexiest half-night of their lives together, but mutually decide the friendship would be better off strictly platonic。

But online dating isn’t for the faint of heart。 While the guys are inundated with quality matches and potential dates, Millie’s first profile attempt garners nothing but dick pics and creepers。 Enter “Catherine”—Millie’s fictional profile persona, in whose make-believe shoes she can be more vulnerable than she’s ever been in person。 Soon “Catherine” and Reid strike up a digital pen-pal-ship。。。but Millie can’t resist temptation in real life, either。 Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear—intimacy—or risk losing her best friend, forever。

But that’s not how it comes across。 There wasn’t really any time to establish them as just friends first, so it’s kind of hard to buy that they’ve been 100% platonic this whole time。 I love romantic relationships in books and it’s much more common for me to complain that it takes too long for the romance to get started, so maybe I should have been happy about this, but there was just no buildup at all and it starts us off on a weird foot。 Beyond that, I hate plots where the conflict is based off of miscommunication or lack of communication, so I didn’t necessarily love the main plot of this book。 I really wish Millie had just told Reid at the beginning that she was Catherine like she almost did。 I mean, this would have been a completely different story if she had, but she just made things so awkward when they didn’t need to be。 And I kind of hate Millie for pretending to be Catherine anyway, because that was a really crappy thing to do to someone who supposedly was her best friend。 I didn’t really love any of the characters in this book, either。 I liked the guys, but they kind of all blended together and I had trouble keeping track of who was who。 I kind of loved Reid, but he was a little too good to be true。 Which I kind of don’t really care about, but it made him a little hard to fully connect to。 It was hard to get a sense of Millie’s personality。 She seemed like one person when the guys were talking about her and another person when she was with Reid and another person when we’re in her head, which I guess is part of the point of her character – that the guys don’t really know her。 But I don’t know how to fully explain it, she just didn’t feel like a fully developed character。 Okay, all of that was a whole lot of negative, but there were definitely things that I liked about this book, too。 Taking Catherine out of the equation, I love a good “best friends who randomly sleep together” storyline so I really enjoyed that aspect of this book。 And I love the moments when their other friends start finding out about it。 I love that we get perspectives from both Millie AND Reid。 Ever since I read a few contemporary romance books that had perspectives from both sides of the relationship, whenever I read a contemporary romance that’s only from the girl’s perspective, it just feels like it’s missing something。 So I really appreciate the fact that we get to see in Reid’s head as well as Millie’s。 Another thing that can leave me unsettled when I’m reading a contemporary romance is when it ends too quickly, so I love that this had an epilogue and that we get to see how everything ended up for our characters。 I couldn’t say that this one of my favorite contemporary romances I’ve ever read, but I also definitely didn’t hate it。 It was just kind of middle of the road for me。 。。。more

I loved this book。 It was a really easy read, but I didn’t want to put it down。 I fell in love with the characters, and got close to them。 I found myself smiling throughout the book。 I didn’t want it to end。

A solid book。 It made me laugh and Millie also made me want to scream because of the choices she made。 Ed, Alex, and Chris are great side characters and I was very invested in their stories during the book as well。

This book cemented my impression that Christina Lauren‘s books are kind of hit and miss。 ‚miss‘ is too harsh, even the worse ones are still very decent rom coms。 But there is some variation not so much in the quality of the writing, which is always great, but in the enjoyment I derived from reading the books。 I don’t usually like to write summaries, because they’re already available on goodreads。 But the plot is what I had an issue with in this book。 Millie and Reid are part of a tightly knit fr This book cemented my impression that Christina Lauren‘s books are kind of hit and miss。 ‚miss‘ is too harsh, even the worse ones are still very decent rom coms。 But there is some variation not so much in the quality of the writing, which is always great, but in the enjoyment I derived from reading the books。 I don’t usually like to write summaries, because they’re already available on goodreads。 But the plot is what I had an issue with in this book。 Millie and Reid are part of a tightly knit friend group, and they have a one night stand。 The whole group signs up to a dating app。 Millie sets up a secret account where she’s not recognizable。 Reid and Millie match on the app, and begin to chat and fall in love。 This isn’t cute to me, it’s catfishing。 And I think it’s made worse by the fact that Reid and Millie are besties and that he trusts her。 If the roles were reversed and Reid was catfishing Millie, I think we would find this very problematic indeed。 Plus, Millie’s appeal was kind of unclear to me。 She’s perceived by Reid and I believe others as basically a super hot and funny girl next door。 But she kind of acts like an asshole。 I just felt like Reid, who seems like a gentle, generous friend to her, deserves better。 Still, as with other CL books, there’s a lot of really good scenes, lots of humor, and if you ignore the slightly icky aspects of the plot, you’ll still find yourself enjoying this。 I would recommend ‘The Unhoneymooners’ or ‘The Soulmate Equation’ above this。 。。。more

Really sweet story, even though I think something was missing。 Millie is really cute but I was so angry at her for not telling Reid, even when she had the opportunity !!Reid is clearly THE man and I love it。I love that we have characters that are real and vulnerable。Not a four or five stars but it’s a good Christina Lauren’s book

I don’t know how to feel。 On the one hand, this was kind of a fast and fun read。 I burned through it pretty quickly and generally enjoyed the experience。 On the other hand… it just objectively wasn’t that good of a book。 I’ve found that I don’t enjoy books where the romance is based on deception。 I also don’t particularly enjoy books where the main character only hangs out with dudes。 I like a female friendship。 Nothing about this book felt real。 I didn’t relate to the main character at all, I d I don’t know how to feel。 On the one hand, this was kind of a fast and fun read。 I burned through it pretty quickly and generally enjoyed the experience。 On the other hand… it just objectively wasn’t that good of a book。 I’ve found that I don’t enjoy books where the romance is based on deception。 I also don’t particularly enjoy books where the main character only hangs out with dudes。 I like a female friendship。 Nothing about this book felt real。 I didn’t relate to the main character at all, I didn’t feel like her guy friends were real people, I didn’t particularly like the love interest… everyone felt wooden, like an outline of a character rather than a real person。 It was like we were repeatedly told what these people were like rather than getting an actual sense of it based on their actions。 It’s hard to explain, but the whole thing felt really flat to me, like the authors were checking off boxes on the types of characters, situations, and ‘growth’ they wanted to include in the story。 I’ve read these authors before and their other book was kind of this way too… maybe it’s part of them being a team rather than operating on their own? It’s hard to make their vision come together and be cohesive? They’re quite popular, and since this was a fast and fluffy read I think I would try one of their books again but with far lower expectations。 。。。more

Whenever I need a break from serious books, I turn to Christina Lauren。 Their books are always easy to read without much thought。 Millie is a professor at a university who is best friends with 4 male colleagues。 She is particularly attracted to Reid and one night after a drunken stupor, they sleep together。 Telling herself he is only a friend she tries to act as if it did not mean anything。 All 5 decide to go on a dating site to find dates to an event put on by the University。 When Millie is mat Whenever I need a break from serious books, I turn to Christina Lauren。 Their books are always easy to read without much thought。 Millie is a professor at a university who is best friends with 4 male colleagues。 She is particularly attracted to Reid and one night after a drunken stupor, they sleep together。 Telling herself he is only a friend she tries to act as if it did not mean anything。 All 5 decide to go on a dating site to find dates to an event put on by the University。 When Millie is matched with Reid, she starts starts seriously talking to him when he thinks he is talking to Kate, her alter ego。 This book took awhile to get interesting but Reid helps Millie get in touch with her true feelings about her traumatic childhood。 Very enjoyable。 。。。more
